The Biggest Free Store Event of the Year

the pop-up free store at uottawa

August 30th is the first and biggest pop-up  Free Store of the year. I guess the best way to explain it is like this... imagine your birthday and Christmas decided to have a coffee date, at the end of the summer, under a giant tent, just before you started your university semester... that's basically what this event is.

Now whether you have been to the Free Store before or if you have never been to the Free Store, it is absolutely worth coming out to this event. Here's why...

More stuff

You will see more things at this event than you normally get to see at the Free Store. The event is being held under the tent in front of FSS specifically so that we can accommodate more people. At the Free Store, we can usually have about 20-30 people max inside the space at any given time. Last year when we hosted this event, we had hundreds of people at the event at any given time. We estimate over 2,000 people attended and over 5,000 kilograms of stuff was given away.

More variety

At the end of the school year, our volunteers collect thousands of kilograms of stuff. Throughout the summer we do put some of that stuff in the Free Store, but the majority of that stuff is stored away and saved just for this event. That means you will see things that no one else has seen yet.

Perfect timing

What I mean by this is  that we specifically do this event before classes start and just as you might be moving into residences or your new place. We do this so that you can avoid having to take a trip to a store to pick up things that you might be missing (boooooo consumerism). From binders to table clothes, we've got you covered.

Time to get green

Let's be honest, it sometimes feels like the odds are stacked against you when you try to do something good for the environment. You buy an environmentally friendly product, but it is wrapped in plastic. You want to eat organic, but it is stupid expensive. This is your chance to actually do something good for the planet that is easy and has virtually no strings attached. We bring everything as close to you as we can to you. All you have to do is wander by and take what you want. Easy and green!

A pile of donations from the end of the academic school year

There are also all the reasons why you typically want to visit the Free Store, namely that you save a bunch of money, you get to support the circular economy, and you get to do some epic people watching.

We are getting set up around 9am and everything we should be rolling by 10am. We will keep everything going until about 3pm. Tell your friends, all are invited!!!
