When you think campus sustainability you might think that the solution is more trees or solar panels. What about a campus sound map, or a campus recyclopedia, or maybe a residence neighbourgoods program? Students in the first year Global Environmental Challenges course (ENV 1101B) recently handed in their poster projects for the semester. Their assignment... make the campus more sustainable in their own little way. This semester the course was taught by Dr. Sonia Wesche  who decided to work with the Office of Campus Sustainability through the Community Service Learning program in order to give students a chance to have the opportunity to do some hands on work to improve campus sustainability (yet another Living Laboratory project). And I can tell you that the students did not disappoint. Every project was amazing but I only have enough time to highlight a couple. When I was a student at the University of Ottawa I spent a lot of my time droning over the courses available in my program. The environment was my thing so I would sit and endlessly read course descriptions in the hopes of finding content that would jump out at me. Imagine how happy I was when I completed my course table full of geeky environmental courses. Now imagine how unhappy I was when I found out that sometimes the profs of those courses didn't share the.... enthusiasm I did for the subject matter. I don't mean to diminish in any way the capacity of those professors to teach, I just think that my expectations were unrealistically high because of all the searching I had done. I was hoping so hard that the professors would be as geeky about the environment as I was. Of course the real problem is that not every prof (in my case) would have been an environmental specialist. School’s in! It is probably appropriate to talk a bit about courses on campus. Why? Because they can contain sustainable development content, or they can be environmentally conscious in the way they are run. We’ll touch upon the latter first because it’s pretty basic: less paper, less resources, less waste. Tips for students and professors to green their classroom (these items generally must be mutually agreed upon) Double-side your assignments, or print them single spaced or on already used one-sided paper Have assignments submitted online or via email Use online course material (also lowering costs to students for copyright material) Encourage taking notes and not printing all slides or readings on paper Buy recycled paper notebooks, or reused one-sided paper notebooks (can be purchased at Reprography) As far as sustainable content, there are a number of courses offered that talk about issues of sustainability and sustainable development.
