Did you know that you can recycle pens at the University of Ottawa? A few years ago, the Office of Campus Sustainability introduced Pen Recycling on campus as an expansion to the recycling program. There is only one problem... how can you get people to recycle something they don't know that they can recycle? Before we go too far down the rabbit hole, let's start with how pens can get recycled. It's actually really simple, we use Terra Cycle - a company that specializing in hard to recycle things. We use them on campus a lot actually. Coffee pods, cigarette butts, plastic gloves... even shoes from time to time. Terra Cycle has a team of people who disassemble things and recycle the components separately. No magic involved, just some elbow grease. The materials (like plastics) get transformed into new items like park benches. Retour sur une année au Bureau du développement durable
Au courant de la dernière, nous avons accompli beaucoup de choses pour rendre notre campus plus durable. Jetez un coup d’œil aux nouveautés en matière de transport, de recyclage, et plus encore. Merci à tous les étudiants, employés et membres de la communauté d’uOttawa de nous aider à rendre notre campus plus vert chaque jour. Taux record de réacheminement des déchets L’Université a atteint un taux record de réacheminement des déchets, soit un taux de 64,5%! Cela veut dire que 64,5% des matériaux utilisés sur le campus ont pu être réutilisé ou recyclé plutôt que de finir dans un site d’enfouissement. Merci de recycler en aussi grand nombre! What Did 2017 Look Like for the Office of Campus Sustainability
We were able to accomplish quite a bit last year to make our campus more sustainable! Take a look at some of the awesome things that happened, from transportation, to recycling, and more. Thank you, uOttawa students, staff, and community members, for helping us make our campus as green as it can be. Record Waste Diversion Rate The University has reached a record waste diversion rate of 64.5%! That means that 64.5% of materials from the campus did not go to the landfill because we reused or recycled them. Thank you for recycling! Thank you, volunteers! This year, our amazing volunteers contributed a collective 4,220 hours towards sustainability efforts on campus. Thank you to our Free Store volunteers, Muggy Mondays volunteers, and Community Service Learning volunteers, as well as those who helped out with other events.
