Photo Credit: itatour.net The last leg of an epic journey took my family and me through Italy – Milano, to be specific, and then over a crazy alpine pass to Zurich, Switzerland. The small alpine towns we passed through seemed to function similarly to the sustainable glory that was St. Anton in Austria, though to a slightly lesser degree. Milano didn’t really give off the impression of being environmentally concerned; I didn’t see any recycling bins anywhere in the downtown core and surrounding streets, but to be fair, I didn’t cover much ground in my wanderings due to time restrictions. Given the sheer amount of tourist traffic, the quantity of waste that would be produced in that city would be gigantic; for the Earth’s sake, I just hope that they had some hidden recycling programs in place (however that would work). Voila déjà un mois que je travaille sur le contenu du site web des futurs Éco-ambassadeurs de l’Université d’Ottawa. Pour ceux qui se demande qu’est ce qu’un Éco-ambassadeur, c’est un étudiant ou une étudiante qui représente les initiatives écologiques dans sa résidence. Cette opportunité donne aux étudiants la chance de s’engager et protéger l’environnement. I wasn’t really expecting Sarajevo to have addressed any of its ecological problems, due to the fact the standard of living is drastically lower than any of the other countries that we visited. One of the biggest problems that the city faces is the incredible amount of smog generated by the masses of poorly-maintained, past-their-prime, inefficient vehicles being driven. Many of the cars on the road spew out putrid black smoke, and when you add all of it together, it poses a severe health hazard. This effect is only amplified by the fact that Sarajevo is located in a valley, directly surrounded by mountains that trap all of this polluted air and keep it hovering above the general populace. We went to Zagreb first and I was pleasantly surprised to find that recycling programs had been put in place, with a particular focus being placed on having the appropriate bins in parks, along beaches, and other similar, family-friendly locations. The next logical step would be to put more stations or bins in more central city locations, particularly downtown, where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic. The thing is, given the kind of general mentality that prevails in most Balkan cities, simply putting the bins in plain view isn’t going to do a whole lot. Not that this isn’t a great start, but it must be done in tandem with educating the general populace about why recycling is necessary. Well, the fact is, Austria really has a handle on how to be eco-friendly and sustainable, particularly in smaller towns. Vous êtes-vous déjà demandé combien un écolier consomme de crayons par an en moyenne? Eh bien selon Le Planétoscope, 15 milliards de crayons sont vendus par année dans le monde! Cela équivaut à 300 000 arbres. Je me demande combien de crayons sont achetés par les plus de 30 000 étudiant-es de l'Université d'Ottawa... Tenant compte que nous avons une population mondiale de 6,8 milliards, ça nous donne 2 crayons et quelque par personne. Est-ce que nous utilisons vraiment autant de crayons par an? Mais détrompez-vous, ce ne sont pas tous les types de chocolat qui sont bénéfiques pour la santé. L’ingrédient clé du chocolat c’est les flavonoïdes. Ces derniers sont des antioxydants qui aident à la réparation des cellules et réduisent les risques de maladies cardiovasculaires. Comme consommateurs, nous n’avons aucune façon de savoir la quantité de flavonoïdes présents dans note barre de chocolat favorite, puisque ce type d’information n’apparait pas sur l’étiquette de nutrition. Devrons-nous l’exiger? Cela dépend des perspectives. Personnellement, je pense qu’étiqueter la valeur de flavonoïde n’est pas une priorité comme l’étiquetage de carbone par exemple. Yeah it is late but come on... you think you could have done better! Please don't answer that question) So the garden was started a couple of days ago. The plots are being dug up and people are already claiming theirs. And just in case you are starting to get any ideas - the plots are already spoken for. But you can get on the waiting list if you want. I mean the odds are that some people may have abandoned their plot. It is July right? Anyways, the garden has a pretty unique design. Basically the whole plot is a like a twisting vine or massive floral pattern. The actual plots are designed to look like leaves, which is pretty sweet. The downfall is that the space may not be used as efficiently as it would otherwise if the plots were rectangles. I’ve decided that this year, I will make a conscious effort to offset my trip on my return, as well as observe sustainable practices in the countries that I will be visiting. I expect to see major differences between the countries I’ll visit that are within the Euro Zone, and the countries without, but overall, I think it’s going to be an educational experience. I know that, despite the fact that recycling programs aren’t as well-developed in the Balkans, the fact is that most of their food, particularly meat, fruit and vegetables, are local, which greatly cuts down on the need for transport, saving CO2 emissions there. Traveling to three different parts of Canada with 10 other young people, totally appealed. With the program focus being Eco-Citizenship and Active Living, I couldn’t wait to get started. Having to create environmental contracts and having our work placements center around “green” organizations, I knew I’d be a changed woman. As a group, we made all sorts of decisions in hopes of making ourselves more environmentally savvy. We would buy local produce whenever possible, take shorter showers, start a vegetable garden and follow the “if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down” philosophy when using the bathroom.
