7 Reasons You Should Check Out The Free Store Today

Here on campus we have a lot of cool places that are sort of university secrets, ones you only find out by word of mouth, only the senior students know, etc. We want to let you in on one of the coolest ones. The Free Store, which collects 22.5 tonnes of donations every year, and you can have any of it...for free! 1. Donation bin This bin fills up and has to be emptied every week. That is awesome, so many items for you to get your hands on. 2. Dump & Run When people move out we have locations in residences where they can dump all the stuff they don’t want instead of throwing it out. Think of all the blankets... 3. Toilet paper/paper towel They have this new project where they take the toilet paper and power towel rolls that are partially used and you can take them for free. Cause who wants to buy more toilet paper? 4. Super nice staff They are actually super nice and helpful. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! 5. Gorgeous building I mean what other st...

Free Store in the Summer

Penny pinchers and waste reducers rejoice- the Free Store has reopened for the summer! For a month and a half, we had to shut the store’s doors so that we could put all of our effort into Dump and Run, the massive task of collecting, cleaning, and organizing all the items students left behind after move-out. The donations filled two basement storage spaces and every inch of the store- you would have to see it to believe it! But now, every Wednesday from 10am-3pm during the summer, the Free Store will be open to fulfill all your needs- from a new outfit for that music festival, to a great summer read, to some kitchen gadgets for your new apartment. Opening day was a huge success- regulars returned and new comers flipped through the racks in awe. Customers left, arms loaded with sneakers, framed art, televisions, you name it! Volunteers were flying around, constantly reloading emptying shelves with treasures. Whether you’ve loved the store since the beginning or you’ve never h...

The Free Store, Just in Time for the Holidays

You can almost find anything at The Free Store , but the chances of finding what you need on your first visit can be low. It's not that the Free Store does not have enough items, but you just can’t seem to find the exact item you are looking for at the right time. First of all, it is not every day that we find all the items in the Free Store. Some items leave the Free Store the second they are put on the shelf. We owe the success of the Free Store to our many donors, but also to all the students who come every day to not by new stuff but to pick it up for free at the Free Store. That effort is worth encouraging! That is why we want to thank you with our wish list. Our volunteers are the first to see every item that gets put out into the Free Store. They could easily get the first choice on whatever they need, but what if we give that first choice to our customers? All you need to tell us is the items you want and as soon as we see it, it will be put aside for you. No need ...

5 Tips for Reducing Waste

Up until a few months ago, waste was not frequently on my mind. Every second week I would make my sacrifice to the Garbage Truck gods and that was the end of that. However dealing with waste on a campus scale opened my eyes to the impacts of our collective action. At first, I felt rather distressed, I knew a problem existed but I felt as though the problem was bigger than me and I did not know how to solve it. In honour of Waste Reduction Week, I looked to my colleagues for inspiration on concrete actions which can help me reduce personal waste. Reduce packaging Nothing angers me more than having to tear through 5 different layers of packaging to get to my food. WHY WON’T YOU LET ME EAT YOU?! It appears as though everything nowadays is packaged, even packaging is packaged! Buying in bulk is one of the ways I have found to reduce waste and those dreaded plastic bags. Some bulk retailers like Market Organics will even let you bring your own Tupperware. As an added bonus buying i...

The Making of Muggy Mondays

So you have an uncontrollable urge to drink coffee but you don't want to pay for it? Fear not dear friends,  Muggy Mondays  has you covered, no questions asked. Of course you are all familiar with the quirky characters of Muggy Mondays who bring you free coffee every Monday morning if you present a reusable coffee mug. And if you aren't familiar, drop by the  FSS building  on the second floor next Monday and we will remedy that problem for you. But one of the things that many people don't realize is the tremendous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to get that coffee into your hands, let alone the care and attention that goes into making that coffee for you. Allow me to shed some light on the Making of Muggy Mondays! BEANS A good cup of coffee starts with the beans. For the past few years, Muggy Mondays has been using Detour Coffee procured from the good people at  Café Alt . Recently, there was a switch over to Kicking Horse who had bee...
