How to be Fashionably Sustainable: Be a Smart, Sustainable Shopper

A three-part series brought to you by us, sharing note-worthy tips and tricks on shopping smart, reducing your textile waste footprint PLUS, how to find sustainable brands! Unfortunately, the fashion industry was not built by green thumbs.  Planetaid.org reports that “clothes can take up to 40 years to decompose.” We are taught to buy anything and everything we might need, which results in over-consumption. So let’s prevent things from piling up! If clutter, wasted money, and outdated clothing describes your current situation, then stay tuned! DO YOUR RESEARCH Research the companies you’re going to shop from. Know what their values are as a corporation in order to support ethical practices . Most major clothing brands are starting to develop collections that have “sustainable”characteristics - but don’t be fooled, major clothing brands like these are still considered “fast fashion” companies, most likely still partake in unethical behaviours such as sweatshops and unfai...

It's Time to Stop Wasting Food

In her cozy office tucked away on the third floor of the University Centre, Maryann Moffitt is working on a project that could help significantly reduce waste on campus and nourish people in the community. Maryann is a dietitian at Food Services , the group on campus responsible for the managing uOttawa's food service contract. But since she arrived on campus just a few short years ago, she has also worn the hat of sustainability practitioner, a role that that  Chartwells added to the University's food service contract. But don't think for one moment that she has taken this adopted role lightly. Since the beginning, it has been a baptism by fire. Maryann has successfully worked on the uOttawa Fair Trade Campus designation, helped Food Services earn a certification from the Green Restaurant Association , and now she has helped create a process to help donate unpurchased food to local community organizations. Donating food is not as easy as one might think. The foo...

Love Food Not Waste

By this point in the school year, most of us know how awesome the all-you-can-eat cafeteria is. When you’re starving after cramming for the midterm in the library, being able to relax and re-energize there feels like heaven. The cafeteria can boast that it is Zero Waste with regards to trash, bottles, plastic, metal etc. However, there is one huge culprit of waste that most of us don’t even think about: food waste. While dining trays were eliminated to help reduce over consumption, our dining hall still turns out to be an enormous source of wasted food. To help raise awareness about this issue, the Office of Campus Sustainability and Food Services took on a mission to measure the average amount of food that is thrown out each day. Over a week long period, the average total of food tossed in the compost bins at the caf was a whopping 1,735 food servings per day! That means that every day, around 1147 pounds of avoidable food is simply composted and every 8-month school year appro...

Guerilla Recycling is back!

It’s happened… I have fallen down the waste reduction rabbit hole. I am not necessarily proud of this but digging through my household trash has become a nightly routine, a mission to properly sort any and all misplaced recycling and compost! I’ve seen and smelled it all, yet I continue to do it because, in my heart of hearts I know that although I am just one person, my waste has a large environmental impact. The average Canadian produces 2.7 kg of waste every day! To me, that represents a whole lot of stuff that doesn’t necessarily have to end up in a landfill. This year, as part of Recylemania, a group of brave crusaders will set out on a clandestine operation to properly sort waste on campus! A year ago, had you told me that burrowing through bags of trash would be an eye opening experience; I would not have believed you. Having performed waste audits I can tell you that digging through garbage is FASCINATING! Not only have I learned how to properly dispose of my items (an...

The Free Store, Just in Time for the Holidays

You can almost find anything at The Free Store , but the chances of finding what you need on your first visit can be low. It's not that the Free Store does not have enough items, but you just can’t seem to find the exact item you are looking for at the right time. First of all, it is not every day that we find all the items in the Free Store. Some items leave the Free Store the second they are put on the shelf. We owe the success of the Free Store to our many donors, but also to all the students who come every day to not by new stuff but to pick it up for free at the Free Store. That effort is worth encouraging! That is why we want to thank you with our wish list. Our volunteers are the first to see every item that gets put out into the Free Store. They could easily get the first choice on whatever they need, but what if we give that first choice to our customers? All you need to tell us is the items you want and as soon as we see it, it will be put aside for you. No need ...

And if you aren't familiar, drop by the  FSS building  on the second floor next Monday and we will remedy that problem for you. But one of the things that many people don't realize is the tremendous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to get that coffee into your hands, let alone the care and attention that goes into making that coffee for you. Allow me to shed some light on the Making of Muggy Mondays! BEANS A good cup of coffee starts with the beans. For the past few years, Muggy Mondays has been using Detour Coffee procured from the good people at  Café Alt . Recently, there was a switch over to Kicking Horse who had bee...
